What is AEO?

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is making your content the answer AI gives. When customers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google instead of browsing links, the one cited in the answer wins. This guide explains the terms — in plain language.

the definition

From ten blue links to one answer

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) means optimising web pages so AI answer engines find, understand and cite them — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. Where traditional SEO is about ranking high in a list of results, AEO is about becoming the answer itself. Interest is growing fast: monthly searches for “AEO” in Norway have nearly doubled in the past year — from about 170 to 320 (SE Ranking, July 2026). The reason is simple: more and more buying decisions start in an AI conversation, not a search box.

the glossary

SEO, AEO, GEO and LLMO — in short

Four overlapping terms, each pointing at its own part of the same job: being found where customers actually look.

SEO — search engine optimisation

The foundation. Technical quality, good content and credible links that build visibility in Google and Bing. Without SEO, nothing else works.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization

Being cited as the answer in AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Requires content that is easy to extract: clear facts, questions and answers, a clear sender.

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization

The umbrella term for visibility in generative engines. In practice GEO and AEO are often used interchangeably — the goal is the same: the AI picks you as its source.

LLMO — Large Language Model Optimization

The long game: building an entity so clear and consistent that language models “know” your brand — and recommend it unprompted.

02

Technical foundation and structured data

Schema.org markup (LocalBusiness, FAQ, Person), llms.txt, clean HTML and fast loading — so both search engines and AI crawlers can read everything.

03

Citable content

Clear fact blocks, concrete numbers, questions and answers. AI cites the concrete — not the vague.

04

A clear sender (E-E-A-T)

Documented experience and expertise, named professionals and consistent facts across the web build the credibility AI looks for.

Measurement and follow-up

We track AI visibility over time and adjust — this is a long run, not a one-off project.

Frequently asked questions about AEO

What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

AEO means optimising content so AI answer engines — like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews — find, understand and cite it in their answers. The goal is to be the source the AI uses when your customers ask.

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO is about ranking high in search results so people click through. AEO is about being cited in the AI answer itself — often without a click. Good AEO always builds on good SEO: technical quality and good content are the foundation of both.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

The terms are largely used interchangeably. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the umbrella term for visibility in generative AI engines, while AEO is often used about being cited as the answer to specific questions. In practice the work is the same.

How does my website get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity?

AI engines prefer sources with clear facts, question-and-answer structure, structured data (Schema.org), open access for AI crawlers and a sender they can trust. Concrete numbers and a clear definition near the top of the page make content easy to extract and cite.

How is AEO measured?

By asking the AI engines the questions your customers ask, and checking whether — and how — your business is mentioned. We measure visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, and track it over time.

How long before you see results?

Technical fixes (structured data, llms.txt, open crawlers) can be picked up within weeks. Authority and entity building take longer — typically months. AI answers update more often than many think, especially in engines with live web search.

Do small and local businesses need AEO?

Yes — often most of all. When someone asks an AI for “the best [service] in [town]”, it pulls the answer from clear local sources: a website with correct facts, a Google Business Profile and a consistent name, address and phone number. Small businesses with tidy data often beat bigger competitors in AI answers.
